The North Star metric is the primary measure of success for your product and product teams. The framework is designed to measure the relationship between customer and business value to drive organizational alignment, communicate impact and hold teams accountable to a meaningful outcome. Based on the North Star metric, product teams should then be focusing on prioritizing and exeucting on product initiatives designed to move that metric.
A good North Star metric should serve as a proxy to measure your current product strategy and act as a leading indicator of value. Depending on your product, your north star will likely fall into one of these three buckets; user attention, transactions or conversions, or productivity.
